We respond to requests for advice on disabled access, visiting premises
if required.
We receive weekly lists of planning applications from the Council's Building Control, and we
co-operate with the Council's Roads Department in the discussion of sites for disabled parking bays and dropped kerbs.
Members of our executive committee serve on a number of other
committees to raise awareness of access issues. This is usually at the request of these outside committees.
We will send a speaker to any group or organisation, with a Powerpoint presentation,
to tell about the work of the Access Panel.
We organise an annual Poster Competition, with a disability theme, for children
aged between 5 and 13 years. Prizes are awarded in 3 age groups: 5-7, 8-10, and 11-13, with a shield being awarded
to the overall winner.
We have a Rod McFarlane Award scheme. This scheme commemorates our
first Chairman. The Award is given to the building/premises which we deem to have done most to make them accessible
for disabled people. This Award is presented annually.
Nominations for the Award are invited from elected Councillors, Community Councils, local Architects,
support groups and organisations. It is also advertised in local papers
